Empress vs Rocket.net: fast WordPress hosting, or one place to run every site

Rocket.net is one of the fastest ways to host WordPress, and one of the cheapest for agencies with a lot of sites. Empress runs on Cloudflare's network too. So the question isn't speed. It's what you need once your sites are up: hosting that stays out of the way, or a way to run every site at once.

Here's what each one is, how each handles the jobs a group of sites has, and what each costs.

What Rocket.net is

Rocket.net is managed hosting for WordPress, built on Cloudflare's Enterprise network. Every site gets a CDN, a firewall, SSL and malware protection, already set up. Support answers around the clock, and it moves your sites over for free.

It's built with agencies in mind: one dashboard for every site, your own brand on it for clients, and plans from 10 sites to 200. Each site is still its own WordPress install, with its own admin, theme and plugins.

What Empress is

Empress is one place to run all of your sites. You land on every site at once, then zoom into the one you need. Each site keeps its own content, look and address, with hosting and security included.

Ask for a change in plain words, in Empress or from the AI you already use. You see it on every site before it goes live.

Use case 1: The spring menu on every homepage

On Rocket.net, the dashboard lists all eight sites. To change them, you open each site's WordPress admin and edit each homepage. Eight sites, eight times.

On Empress, you ask once: "Put the spring menu on every homepage." All eight appear side by side. Send one preview link to the chef or the client, then put them live together, or one first.

Changed your mind? One step takes it back on every site. Anything published since stays where it is.

Use case 2: The whole group on one screen

On Rocket.net, you see every site's hosting in one place. What's happening on each site lives in its own WordPress.

On Empress, every site's numbers sit together, and the page tells you what happened: which post carried the month, which site is slipping. A weekly report covers the group.

Form submissions arrive sorted into ready to publish, needs drafting and needs an answer. Each is two clicks from live.

Unlimited seats, with roles and safeguards, for your team and your clients.

Use case 3: Writers stay in Google Docs

On Rocket.net, a writer copies from a Google Doc into each site's editor and fixes the formatting every time.

On Empress, a Google Doc becomes a draft on any number of sites in seconds, in each site's own look. Writers never learn another editor.

Use case 4: Design with the tools you already use

On Rocket.net, a design in Figma becomes a WordPress theme by hand, one site at a time.

On Empress, bring a Figma frame or a screenshot. Empress builds it into the theme and checks it on phone, tablet and laptop. Then roll the new look out to one brand or all of them.

Use case 5: Developers get the code

On Rocket.net, developers work in each site's WordPress files, one site at a time.

On Empress, every theme is a git repository. Pull it, run it on your laptop against your real content, and push to one site or the whole group from the command line.

Use case 6: Agents that run the hosting, or agents that run the sites

Rocket.net is building for AI agents too. Its site says an agent can set up a new WordPress site in under a minute.

Empress agents work on what's on the sites. The AI you already use can rewrite a page on one site, update a menu on all of them, or tell you which site had the most bookings last month.

And your sites answer other people's agents. When a guest asks theirs for a table on Friday, it can search your group, check hours and menus, and book.

Use case 7: Plugins, or built in

On WordPress, forms, signups, bookings and memberships are each a plugin, on each site, to choose, update and pay for. Rocket.net keeps WordPress fast and safe, but the plugins are still yours.

On Empress, forms, newsletter signups and a Stripe shop are built in. Reservations, events, memberships and a paywall come in add-on packs.

Pricing

Rocket.net's standard plans, billed monthly:

  • Starter, 1 site: $30 a month
  • Pro, 3 sites: $60 a month
  • Business, 10 sites: $100 a month
  • Expert, 25 sites: $200 a month

Billed annually, those are $25, $50, $83 and $166 a month. Agency plans run from 20 sites for $200 to 200 sites for $1,600 a month. Extra storage is $2 a gigabyte and extra bandwidth 8 cents a gigabyte. Your first month is $1.

Empress is $299 a month with three sites included, then $75 a site up to ten, falling to $30 a site as you grow. Ten sites come to $824 a month, with hosting, security, analytics, AI access, unlimited seats and support. The Hospitality pack is $300 a site and the Publishing pack $450.

For hosting alone, Rocket.net is a fraction of the price. Empress is for running the sites: every change, on every site, made once.
